PART I
Background of the Subject Literature

A. Clientele

The type of library focused on in this project is a general academic music library with a special collection of jazz music.

Academic libraries are generally geared toward a different group of patrons than public libraries. Students and faculty of a university, as well as professional researchers, are the main users of an academic library. Many academic libraries also include the general public, typically users not affiliated with the university, in their mission statements. Collection development efforts, however, tend heavily toward meeting the research needs of the academic community.

In addition to the usual group of users, a library with a special collection of jazz music and related materials attracts another, more specialized group of users. These users may include general music lovers, jazz enthusiasts, serious jazz researchers, music and social historians, acoustic engineers, musicians (professional and amateur), singers and composers.
